What is PCOS?
…and other important information
What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome? (also recently referred to as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovary Syndrome or PMOS)?
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) which is also recently referred to as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovary Syndrome or PMOS is one of the most common endocrine disorders affecting women of reproductive age. This occurs when the ovaries make too many of the male hormones (androgens). It interferes with the normal menstrual cycle and ovulation. This can mean women with PCOS may have irregular periods, trouble conceiving, acne, excess facial or body hair, thinning hair on the scalp and unexplained weight gain. It’s called PCOS, but not all women with PCOS have ovarian cysts. It also affects how the body uses insulin, which can lead to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and other long-term health problems if left untreated. There is no cure, but early diagnosis, a healthy diet, regular physical activity, stress management and proper medical care can aid in controlling symptoms and improving overall health and fertility.
